Start with the person’s perspective

Every relationship is calculated from the person selected in Viewing from. The same person can be a son to one family member, a brother to another, and a nephew to someone else.

Mother’s side

Use birth order among the mother’s siblings. The number follows the family’s order, not the age of the person speaking.

Older and younger paternal siblings use different Cantonese roots. Add the birth-order number when there is more than one.

How “oldest / first / second” works

For aunties and uncles, record their birth order among their siblings. The tree can then show “oldest maternal aunt”, “second paternal uncle”, or the family’s preferred spoken form. Birth order is separate from generation and should never be guessed from a person’s age alone.

Built for more than one culture

Cantonese is our first reference set, not a universal rule. Different families and cultures may distinguish relatives by side, age, gender, marriage, clan, or formality in different ways. Each culture should have its own terminology profile with English meaning, native characters, Pinyin or romanisation, pronunciation, and a family-approved alternative.
